The 7/8" Revolution Elliptical Bowl Gouge is crafted from 15V steel and engineered for precision bowl turning. Its unique beam shape—⅛" taller than wide—delivers superior rigidity with the agility of a smaller tool, allowing large-volume cuts with a clean finish. Shipped with Stuart Batty’s 40/40™ grind, this gouge removes side grain with the wing while simultaneously slicing end grain at the tip for a dual-action cut unmatched by any other turning tool.

Materials & Construction

The cutting edge is 15V tool steel, laminated to a heat-treated and hardened stainless steel substrate (45 HRC). This lamination process makes 15V viable for woodturning by bonding it to a tough stainless body that absorbs the long overhang demands of tool rest use. The hardened stainless steel bolster is reusable indefinitely.

Sharpening Guide

For best results, sharpen freehand on a grinding platform. Recommended abrasives include CBN wheels (180–320 grit), Norton SG Ceramic wheels, and 3M Trizact or Cubitron II belts. Stuart Batty’s 40/40™ grind requires freehand sharpening—a jig cannot accurately replicate the grind on elliptical flute profiles.
