2 1/4" Laminated 15V Spindle Roughing Gouge

Patent Pending — Revolution Gouge™ design.

The 2 1/4" Revolution Spindle Roughing Gouge features laminated 15V steel bonded to a hardened stainless steel substrate for the longest edge life available in a spindle roughing gouge. Designed exclusively for side grain peeling cuts, this gouge rounds spindle blanks quickly and efficiently. Shipped with a 40/90 grind (40° bevel angle, 90° wing angle) optimized for roughing spindle blanks.

Important: This gouge is designed for spindle turning only. Never use a spindle roughing gouge for bowl turning—the opposing grain direction creates a guaranteed catch.

Key Features

  • Laminated 15V steel edge lasts up to 7x longer than M2 and up to 5x longer than M42
  • Advanced lamination bonds 15V to hardened stainless steel (45 HRC) substrate
  • Optimized flute length and ultra-strong substrate design balance strength and mass
  • Even-thickness flute wall for easier resharpening
  • Shipped with 40/90 grind—ready to use out of the box
  • Removable Taper Lock Bolster for unlimited reuse
  • Vibration-free performance even with extended tool rest overhang
  • Tool-free handle locking with option to change handle length or add extension

Materials & Construction

15V tool steel is laminated to a heat-treated and hardened stainless steel substrate (45 HRC). The lamination process enables the use of 15V—which would otherwise be too brittle for the overhang demands of woodturning—by bonding it to a tough stainless body. The hardened stainless steel Taper Lock Bolster provides a secure, vibration-free blade-to-handle connection and can be reused indefinitely.

Sharpening Guide

For best results, sharpen freehand on a grinding platform. Recommended abrasives include CBN wheels (180–320 grit), Norton SG Ceramic wheels, and 3M Trizact or Cubitron II belts. Maintain the 40° bevel angle and keep wings at 90° for optimal roughing performance.
