Conventional scrapers have only one bevel; pointing it downward does not make it a Negative Rake Scraper. It will remain aggressive, especially on end grain and denser woods. Secondly, the NRS blade must have a burr created from a grinding wheel/belt and not a burr created with a burnisher/ticketer, as this is a curled edge. Once the NRS burr is worn down, the tool will become ineffective as an NRS and must be resharpened to recreate a new burr on the blade edge.

Note: Negative Rake Scraping is very effective on medium to very dense woods and even those impregnated with polymers. Unlike conventional scraping, it uses a blade with both a top and bottom bevel (like a skew) to create controlled abrasion rather than an aggressive cut. The blade edge is positioned at center height with the tool handle parallel to the floor — it does not require pointing downhill like a conventional scraper.

The technique relies entirely on a burr formed by grinding the lower bevel against a wheel or belt. The 20-degree negative rake top angle is pre-ground on each blade; you grind only the lower bevel to create the burr. You can set the grinding angle at 20, 22.5, 25, 30, 35, or 40 degrees using angle gauges. Lower angles produce a larger burr. Once the burr wears down, the blade must be resharpened to recreate it.

Unlike conventional and carbide scrapers, which must be kept narrow to reduce aggression, the NRS is never aggressive regardless of how much edge contacts the wood. This makes it highly effective for removing tool marks, uneven surfaces, and torn grain. It works best on medium to very dense woods; very soft or spalted woods may not respond as well.

Burr & Grit Guide

80 Grit: Very large burr, approximately 100 regrinds per blade (longest burr life)

120 Grit: Large burr, approximately 150 regrinds per blade

180 Grit: Medium burr, approximately 200 regrinds per blade

220 Grit: Medium burr, approximately 240 regrinds per blade

320 Grit: Fine burr, approximately 350 regrinds per blade

600 Grit: Very fine burr, approximately 600 regrinds per blade (shortest burr life)

Materials & Construction

The NRS body is precision-machined from 3/8" thick heat-treated hardened stainless steel.
